(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2026) Līva Lidžus; Žanna Martinsone; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine

(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2026) Edgars Krūmiņš; Dace Jakimova; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine

(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2026) Nikola Katrīna Vasule; Valters Āboliņš; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine

Deep learning Applications in Cardiovascular Risk Prediction Using Retinal Fundus Imaging: A literature Review
(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2025) Walid Dawoud; Elīna Pašuna; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine
This literature review examines the use of deep learning (DL) models in analyzing retinal fundus images for predicting cardiovascular risks. It compiles current findings from peer-reviewed research conducted between 2020 and 2025, which have developed and validated DL algorithms for forecasting cardiovascular events and risk factors using retinal photographs. A thematic narrative method was utilized to identify methodological trends, performance measurements, and clinical implications across diverse study designs. Models such as Reti-CVD, Reti-CAC, and networks for predicting retinal age show strong correlations with traditional risk indicators, like coronary artery calcium (CAC) and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), highlighting the retina as a non-invasive marker of systemic vascular health. The review concludes that while DL-based retinal biomarkers offer significant predictive potential, additional real-world validation and regulatory alignment are necessary before they can be implemented clinically

Postoperative Period and Results after Preserflo Implantation in Glaucoma Patients
(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2025) Haris Hadžimustafič; Irīna Vaļkova; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine
“Efficacy and Safety of PreserFlo MicroShunt Implantation in Glaucoma Patients” reviews current clinical evidence on the PreserFlo MicroShunt as a surgical option for lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucoma. The study summarizes data from clinical trials and meta-analyses published between 2018 and 2025, comparing the device’s efficacy and safety with conventional trabeculectomy. Glaucoma is described as a major cause of irreversible blindness, and reducing IOP remains the only proven method to slow disease progression. When medications and laser treatment fail, surgery is indicated. Trabeculectomy, although effective, is associated with high complication rates. The PreserFlo MicroShunt offers a less invasive alternative that maintains pressure control with fewer risks. The device is an 8.5 mm-long biocompatible SIBS polymer tube with a 70 µm lumen, implanted under the conjunctiva using an ab externo technique. Mitomycin-C (MMC) is applied to reduce postoperative fibrosis. Its fixed lumen diameter provides controlled aqueous outflow and minimizes hypotony risk. The review includes seven clinical studies and two meta-analyses, covering about 1,000 eyes. Across studies, PreserFlo implantation reduced IOP by 35–45%, lowering mean pressures from 22–24 mmHg to 12–15 mmHg. The need for topical medication decreased by 70–80%, with most patients remaining medication-free at one year. Long-term data show sustained IOP control for up to five years. The most frequent complication was transient hypotony, occurring in about 20% of cases and resolving spontaneously. Serious complications, such as chronic hypotony, infection, or endophthalmitis, were rare (<1%). Compared with trabeculectomy, PreserFlo produced slightly higher final IOP but with fewer postoperative adverse events, including lower rates of bleb leakage and shallow anterior chamber. The PreserFlo MicroShunt achieves meaningful and sustained pressure reduction with a favorable safety profile. While trabeculectomy remains more effective in achieving very low IOP levels, PreserFlo offers a safer and more predictable option for patients with moderate to advanced glaucoma. However, an emphasis should be placed on the need for longer follow-up and standardized surgical protocols to confirm long-term durability and cost-effectiveness.

The impact of shift work on mental health: Focus on depression
(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2025) Antony Elia Gawrieh; Marija Burčeņa; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine

Lumbar back pain as a problem in occupational medicine
(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2025) Mirka-Maija Kristiina Paavola; Ieva Kalve; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine
This thesis presents a narrative review of the global public health problem of lumbar back pain (LBP), the most common occupational musculoskeletal disorder and a leading cause of disability worldwide. The author argues that both the onset and persistence of LBP among workers result from the complex interplay of physical and psychosocial factors such as heavy workload, low job control, and limited social support. The paper aims to (1) outline the global and occupational prevalence of LBP, (2) analyze its multifactorial risk factors, and (3) assess the effectiveness of preventive strategies. Drawing on current evidence, it concludes that integrated ergonomic and behavioral interventions can meaningfully reduce the burden of LBP and improve long-term worker health. The synthesis results in an evidence-based framework that summarizes key findings relevant to comprehensive, multi-modal strategies for reducing LBP incidence and enhancing long-term worker health.

Eczema in Association with Occupational Exposure and Hygiene Practices Among Hospital
(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2025) Marlene Schulze; Jeļena Reste; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine
Background. Eczema, or dermatitis, is a group of inflammatory skin conditions which can have a significant negative impact on the quality of life as well as work performance. Healthcare workers may be especially susceptible to developing such skin conditions, as the infection control measures of the work in hospitals include frequent hand sanitization, washing, and prolonged glove wearing, which are all factors probable to cause eczema. Implementation of appropriate measures to prevent the development of eczema is essential to maintain quality of life, work performance, and ensure that there is no early exit from the profession. Aim. The aim of this research paper is to investigate the association between hygiene practices and eczema among healthcare professionals, identifying common risk factors and preventive approaches. Method. A written, structured literature review where existing research and analyses were used to discuss occupational eczema in association with different hygiene practices, as well as possible risk factors and prevention methods. Results. The review found that healthcare workers have a higher risk of developing occupational eczema, especially hand eczema. This is largely attributable to cumulative wet-work exposure interacting with individual susceptibility and work environment. In particular, frequent soap-and-water handwashing and longer daily duration of occlusive glove wear are strongly associated with higher rates of hand eczema, whereas alcohol-based hand sanitizer is generally better tolerated. Departments with more rigorous hygiene regimens consistently bear the greatest eczema burden, reflecting their higher exposure levels. Personal risk factors (such as female gender, atopy, or filaggrin gene variants) modify how strongly a given exposure leads to disease. The consequences of occupational hand eczema are not only dermatological – it also reduces quality of life, increases sick leave usage, and can influence career decisions. Key approaches include favoring alcohol-based hand rubs over soap when possible, providing ready access to emollient moisturizers (and education on their proper use), and general staff education about hand skin care. Conclusions. Occupational hand eczema among healthcare workers is predictable and preventable. The highest burdens occur where wet-work exposure is intense, individual susceptibility is present, and environmental factors are unfavorable; adjusting hygiene protocols and improving skin protection can markedly reduce disease incidence without compromising patient safety.

Ergonomic workplace modifications for pregnant nurses: can they reduce pregnancy complications?
(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2025) Aysha Basheer; Sabīne Grīnberga; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine
This thesis explores whether ergonomic workplace modifications for pregnant nurses reduce pregnancy complications. It talks about the nurses being exposed to physical, chemical, and psychosocial risks. Utilizing a scoping review of 30 peer reviewed studies published between 1990 and 2024, the evidence showed that prolonged standing, heavy lifting and exposure to radiation, antineoplastic agents and disinfectants increase risks of miscarriages, preterm births and musculoskeletal pain. This paper highlights that ergonomic interventions such as mechanical lifts, sit-stand workstations and shift adjustments dramatically decrease these complications. This study concludes that by combining ergonomic redesign, supportive frameworks and positive workplace culture, outcomes of both maternal and fetal health effectively improves.

Cardiovascular Risks in Night Shift Workers: A Systematic Review of Evidence and Implications for Occupational Health Screening
(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2025) Samer Fathalla Ali; Jeļena Reste; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine
The thesis “Cardiovascular Risks in Night Shift Workers: A Systematic Review of Evidence and Implications for Occupational Health Screening” by Samer Fathalla Ali presents a systematic literature review exploring the relationship between night shift work and cardiovascular health outcomes. The study compiles European cohort data consistent with the EU Working Time Directive to evaluate the effects of night shift exposure on ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular events, atrial fibrillation and mortality. Evidence shows an exposure–response association, where prolonged or intensive night work increases the risk of ischemic and cerebrovascular diseases, particularly after five or more years of exposure. Pathophysiological mechanisms include circadian rhythm desynchronization, sleep deprivation, and inflammatory responses. Current Swedish occupational health screening guidelines, used as a reference for EU standards, were analyzed and found insufficient in frequency and inclusion criteria. The author recommends risk-stratified health assessments with more frequent cardiovascular screening for night shift workers. The study concludes that night shift work represents a modifiable occupational risk factor for circulatory diseases and calls for improved preventive health strategies across EU member states.

Return-to-work outcomes of burn injuries and occupationally acquired burns
(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2025) Nicolina Sofia Antti; Ieva Kalve; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine
Advances in burn treatment have significantly reduced mortality, resulting in a growing population of burn survivors living with potential functional and occupational impairments. Return to work has been used as a marker for meaningful recovery. This varies largely depending on the severity of the burn, often characterized by depth and total surface area, as well as individual socioeconomic and psychosocial backgrounds. The aim of this research paper is to collectively review literature on return to work outcomes following burn injuries to compare rates and identify key predictors on successful reintegration. This review also aims to differentiate outcomes based on burn etiology focusing on differences in return to work in non-occupationally and occupationally acquired burns.

Chemicals of concern of household products
(Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, 2025) Victoria Pettersen Tviberg; Darja Kaļužnaja; Medicīnas fakultāte; Faculty of Medicine
Exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from household products has raised increasing concerns regarding the potential health effects. In European residences, more than 65 VOCs have been identified, many of which are linked to respiratory, neurological and carcinogenic outcomes. In China, almost everyone in major cities face a lifetime cancer risk above acceptable threshold of 10-4 due to VOCs. This literature review examined the relationship between long-term VOC exposure and adverse health outcomes, especially depression and cancer risk. The study synthesizes data from peer-reviewed research, highlighting key VOCs such as formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, acetone, and limonene, which are commonly found in indoor environments. Inhalation was identified as the primary exposure route, with dermal absorption also contributing to systemic absorption. Research papers were collected using systematic searches in PubMed and Elsevier, focused towards studies published between 2020-2025. Only peer-reviewed studies with household exposure and health effects were included, while occupational studies were excluded. The aim of thesis was to assess the risk of depression and cancer risk related to exposure to specific VOCs present in household chemicals. Findings indicated a significant correlation between VOC exposure and increased risk of depression, particularly through compounds like acrylonitrile and butadiene, with gender-specific differences in susceptibility. Furthermore, formaldehyde exposure was consistently associated with a higher risk of leukemia, as seen by epidemiological data from various regions. Global comparisons revealed disparities in VOC regulations, with exposure levels being substantially higher in China compared to the United States and Europe. The study emphasized the need for stricter regulatory policies, public awareness initiatives, and technological advancements to reduce VOC exposure. Recommendations include improved ventilation, usage of low-VOC products, and targeted interventions to reduce exposure in vulnerable populations. By addressing these concerns through a multidisciplinary approach, the long-term health risks of VOCs can be significantly reduced. Conclusion: The work hypothesis was partly proven, with evidence supporting associations between VOCs, depression and cancer risk. However, further longitudinal studies are necessary.

Author: Giselle Uwingabire Title: The Impact of Remote Work During the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Musculoskeletal System Type of paper: Scientific Thesis Study programme: Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Rīga Stradiņš University Supervisor: Sabīne Grīnberga, MSc Ergonomics and Human Factors, M.Env.Sc., Lecturer Annotation: The COVID-19 pandemic caused a rapid global shift to remote and hybrid work models, raising concerns about musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) related to poor ergonomics, prolonged sitting, and psychosocial strain. This scientific thesis presents a narrative literature review of quantitative studies published between January 2020 and May 2025, examining the prevalence, severity, and determinants of MSDs among remote workers. A total of 24 eligible studies were included from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Findings indicate that MSD prevalence among remote workers ranged from 26% to over 70%, with the neck, shoulders, and lower back being the most frequently affected regions. Poor workstation ergonomics, increased sedentary time, reduced physical activity, and psychosocial stressors were consistently associated with elevated symptom rates. The review highlights significant methodological heterogeneity and reliance on self-reported measures. The study concludes that remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with increased musculoskeletal symptoms, underscoring the need for ergonomic interventions and standardized longitudinal research to mitigate future occupational health risks.
