Izvērtējot mutes dobuma kopšanas paradumus, tikai puse no senioriem veic zobu tīrīšanu divas reizes dienā, higiēnai lielākoties veltot 2 minūtes un bieži vien tikai 1 minūti no sava laika. Seniori ļoti reti izvēlas lietot palīglīdzekļus- zobu diegu, mēles tīrītāju un mutes skalojamo līdzekli. Kopumā vērtējot mutes veselības pašnovērtējumu un mutes higiēnas paradumus, Latvijas seniori veic nepietiekamu mutes dobuma kopšanu.
This study is designed to find out what is the self-assessment of oral health and oral hygiene habits of seniors. Research shows that 3.9 billion people are affected by oral diseases worldwide and the number of people with untreated oral disorders are estimated to be 3.5 billion.(FDI World Dental Federation, 2017) About 19% of seniors do not have their natural teeth, 18% of seniors have untreated caries and 68% have periodontitis. Elderly people are at increased risk of root caries, affecting 50% of people over the age of 75. Xerostomia affects 30% of people over the age of 65 and up to 40% of seniors over the age of 80. (ADA) Aim of the research: To find out the self-assessment of oral health and oral hygiene habits of seniors. Research question: What is the oral health self-assessment and what are the oral hygiene habits of seniors? Research method: Quantitative research that uses a questionnaire. The research tool was developed by the author (see Appendix 2) In total 111 respondents, 60 women and 51 men, over 65 years of age, participated in the research process. The average age of the respondents was 73.3 years. The questionnaire was handed out to respondents in general practitioner offices and care institutions. The research tool was made in Latvian language and the data processed with the SPSS Statistics program. Seniors living in Latvia assess their oral health as satisfactory in most cases (57,7%), quite often as good (34,2%) and less often as bad (6,3%). When evaluating oral care habits, only half of the seniors brush their teeth twice a day, devoting mostly 2 minutes and often only 1 minute of their time for hygiene. Seniors very rarely choose to use dental care aids - dental floss, tongue cleaner and mouthwash. In general, when assessing the self-assessment of oral health and oral hygiene habits, Latvian seniors perform insufficient oral care.
