Abstract: | Darba nosaukums: Krūts vēža pacientu pieredze par noguruma pārvarēšanu 1-12
Viens no

Title: The experience of coping with fatigue in breast cancer patients 1-12 months post-chemotherapy Background: Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Latvia and worldwide. The side effects associated with its treatment significantly affect the quality of life of breast cancer patients. One of the most common side effects is fatigue, with a prevalence of up to 90.3% in patients after chemotherapy. While several methods are recommended in the literature to reduce it, there are no studies on how these recommendations are applied in everyday life. Objective: To explore the experience of breast cancer patients in overcoming fatigue 1-12 months after chemotherapy. Methods: Qualitative phenomenological research design with deductive data analysis, research participants – six patients with breast cancer 1-12 months post-chemotherapy, tool – semi-structured interviews. Results: During interviews, participants shared their experiences of fatigue, revealing its varying intensity and impact on daily activities. To alleviate fatigue, the research participants primarily engaged in physical activities, though they also mentioned mindfulness, rest, relaxation, psychologist consultations, family support, dietary changes, medication or vitamin use, and acupuncture. The research participants obtained information about ways to reduce fatigue from other cancer patients, healthcare professionals, or available leaflets, posters. However, half of the participants indicated that this information was difficult to find independently. Participants were interested in continuing physical activities to alleviate fatigue with a professional and expressed a desire to include physical activities in the cancer treatment programs. Conclusions: Patients with breast cancer 1-12 months after chemotherapy engage in physical activities, visit psychologists, observe rest days, have changed their eating habits, use pharmacological interventions, and acupuncture for fatigue management. Among these methods, physical activity is noted as the most used and effective. Patients value encouragement and support from peers and healthcare professionals for engaging in physical activities, but post-treatment, this support diminishes significantly. Additionally, patients indicate a need for more awareness about possible fatigue and its management options, and they wish for physical activities to be included as part of state-funded treatment programs. Keywords: breast cancer, chemotherapy, fatigue management, patient experience. |
