Abstract: Bakalaura darba nosaukums: Coffea arabica L. kafijas ietekme uz studentu kognitīvajām spējām.
Title of Bachelor's Thesis: The effect of Coffea arabica L. coffee on students' cognitive abilities. Author of Bachelor's Thesis: Liene Mertena, student of Riga Stradins University Rehabilitation Faculty undergraduate study programme "Nutrition". Aim of the research: To assess the effect of Coffea arabica L. coffee with caffeine on students' cognitive abilities. Relevance of the research: Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide with more than 165 million 60 kg bags consumed annually. Given that caffeine is believed to increase alertness and enhance psychomotor function, many students use coffee to combat fatigue, ward off sleepiness and improve work and cognitive performance. Caffeine addiction is common and on the rise among medical students. Although the acute effect of caffeine is believed to be related to its action as a central nervous system stimulant, literature contains conflicting research results on the effects of coffee on higher cognitive functions. Research methods: Quantitative masked experimental study. Respondents performed cognitive ability tests on the Internet platform "Exploro" before and after drinking coffee; participants were randomized into a study and a control group. 38 participants were included in the data analysis; 29 women and nine men aged 18-30. Data were analyzed using Excel, JASP 0.14.1 and SPSS 27.0 programmes. Results: In the Symbol Substittution Test, the mean information processing speed improved in both groups. In the Stroop Colour Test, which measures control functions, the average reaction time when making a correct decision significantly decreases. While there is a significant interaction with the other parameters (the number of correct and incorrect reactions, the average time of incorrect reactions) - the results in the study and control groups are opposite. Conclusion: In the specific study design, a direct effect of caffeine consumption on information processing speed and executive functions was not observed, but a significant interaction was observed between the independent variables - time (before and after measurement) and group.
