Kopsavilkums

Background: Many people around the world live or work at high altitudes or hot environments. These environmental conditions put the body under extra stress and affect the way it performs. Working either at substantially above the sea level or at warm climate require proper adaptation from the body to ensure its healthy physical functionality. Objectives: To review literature about the effect of altitude and temperature on body at work. To understand the main physiological challenges work at altitude or suboptimal temperature pose to the human body, and to understand the way the body adopts to these conditions. Methods: Literature review that includes studies and articles from a variety of sources, including internet databases, professional magazines, and books. Conclusion: After ascent to altitude, the body must adopt to the lower partial pressure of oxygen in the atmospheric air. Changes happen in the functionality of the cardiovascular, circulatory, and respiratory systems. During prolonged stays, changes may be seen in the body composition. Hypoxic environment also affects the energy expenditure of the body. Hot environments expose the body to heat stress. At both high altitudes and high temperatures, successful adaptation is the key to healthy functionality of the human body.
