Mikro- un nanoplastmasa ir plaši izplatīta vidē, un nesen pirmo reizi tā tika atklāta placentā. Grūtniecība ir īpaši problemātiska, jo tajā ir paaugstināta jutība pret vides toksīniem. Plastmasas daļiņu nokļūšanas organismā ietekme uz veselību vēl nav zināma, taču jau ir konstatēta tāda nelabvēlīga ietekme kā preeklampsija, priekšlaicīgas dzemdības un zems dzimšanas svars.
Literatūras pārskatā sniegta rūpīga analīze par pašreizējiem pierādījumiem attiecībā uz MNP klātbūtni cilvēka placentā. Tajā novērtēta arī iespējamā kaitīgā ietekme uz māti un augli, tostarp grūtniecības iznākums. Dažādos in vitro un ex vivo placentas modeļos pētīta šo daļiņu uzņemšana, transportēšana un toksicitāte.

Micro- and nanoplastics are omnipresent in the environment and have recently been revealed in the placenta for the first time. Pregnancy is of particular concern, as it is a period of increased susceptibility to environmental toxins. The health impact of plastic particles in the body is yet unknown but adverse effects such as pre-eclampsia, premature birth and a low birth weight have already been recorded. The literature review provides a thorough analysis of the current evidence regarding the presence of MNPs in the human placenta. It also assesses potential adverse effects on the mother and fetus, including pregnancy outcomes. Various in vitro and ex vivo placental models investigate the uptake, transport and toxicity of these particles.
