Micro- and nanoplastics are omnipresent in the environment and have recently been revealed in the placenta for the first time. Pregnancy is of particular concern, as it is a period of increased susceptibility to environmental toxins. The health impact of plastic particles in the body is yet unknown but adverse effects such as pre-eclampsia, premature birth and a low birth weight have already been recorded. The literature review provides a thorough analysis of the current evidence regarding the presence of MNPs in the human placenta. It also assesses potential adverse effects on the mother and fetus, including pregnancy outcomes. Various in vitro and ex vivo placental models investigate the uptake, transport and toxicity of these particles. The data was collected from journals such as `Environmental International` using databases like PubMed or ScienceDirect. |
