Kopsavilkums

This bachelor’s thesis examines the nutrition literacy of young athletes at Tukums Sports School, considering their regular physical activity and the resulting need for a balanced diet aligned with training demands. The relevance of this study lies in the limited information available on the nutrition literacy of young athletes in sports schools and the insufficient understanding of how nutrition knowledge translates into daily dietary habits. The aim of the study was to assess the level of nutrition literacy among young athletes at Tukums Sports School and to analyze their daily dietary habits, general nutrition knowledge and sports nutrition knowledge. The study was conducted as a quantitative cross-sectional study using a structured self-assessment questionnaire. A total of 80 young athletes at Tukums Sports School, aged 8 to 18 years, participated in the study. Descriptive and comparative statistical methods were used for data analysis. The results indicate that the majority of participants have a medium to high level of general nutrition knowledge, whereas sports nutrition knowledge is more often at a medium level. It was found that nutrition knowledge does not always translate into healthy daily dietary habits, particularly with regard to breakfast consumption, fruit and vegetable intake, fluid intake and the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. No statistically significant association was found between nutrition literacy and gender; however, a trend was observed indicating higher nutrition knowledge levels among older participants. Family members and coaches were identified as important sources of nutrition information. The results of the study highlight the need to further develop nutrition literacy among young athletes in sports schools, with particular emphasis on sports nutrition and the promotion of practical, everyday healthy eating habits through the integration of nutrition education into sports training. Keywords: nutrition literacy, sports nutrition, young athletes, dietary habits, nutrition knowledge.
