Abstract: | Ir zināms, ka medicīnas studentiem mācību laikā un turpmākajā profesionālajā dzīvē nākas saskarties ar lielu darba slodzi un lielu akadēmisko spiedienu. Medical students are known to be exposed to a great workload and high academic pressure during their training and further on in professional life. As they are faced with various challenges during medical school, one of the greatest challenges for them may not be another patient, but their own mental health. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of depression and anxiety among medical students from different parts of the world and compare them to the general population. Scientific data was collected by systematically searching databases such as PUBMED, BMC and Elsevier and applying specific inclusion and exclusion cirteria to the present studies. This literature review includes six cross sectional studies, one longitudinal study and one meta- analysis. Out of the eight studies included, seven studies found increased prevalence of depression when compared to the general population. The highest prevalence of depression could be found in Egypt with 65%. Prevalence of anxiety was increased in six out of six studies covering that topic. Here again, the study from Egypt concluded the highest prevalence of anxiety with 73%. Multiple factors that increased the risk for mental disorders were extracted from the studies and analysed. Prevalence of depression and anxiety among medical students is increased when compared to the general population. Being female, a poor financial situation, academic satisfaction and physical health were the main predictors for mental health disorders. |
