Background: Recent studies have shown that periodontitis is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease. There is a link between periodontitis and the progression of cardiovascular disease where the route of transmission occurs through periodontal pathogens entering the bloodstream. Aim: This scientific research aims to review the newest literature about periodontitis impact on the development of cardiovascular disease. This thesis will mainly focus on the relation between periodontitis and atherosclerosis. Conclusion: Chronic periodontitis may raise cardiovascular risk due to immune response activation. Further research is necessary to clarify the role of the exact pathogen in periodontal infection that contributes to development and progression of cardiovascular disease and the effectiveness of conventional periodontal therapy concerning cardiovascular disease. |
