Abstract: Ievads. Pirms antipirētiskās terapijas, vecāki bērnu atbrīvoja no liekā apģērba/nodrošināja pietiekamu šķidruma uzņemšanu (82,0%, n=450). Tikai 14,8% vecāku antipirētiķus deva pie rekomendētās temperatūras (≥ 39,0°C) (n=81). Vidzemē (15,3%) antipirētisko terapiju līdz 37,9°C procentuāli izvēlējās dot trīs reizes vairāk vecāku nekā Rīgā/Pierīgā (4,8%). Neskatoties uz to, vecākiem kļūstot vecākiem, pieauga viņu zināšanas drudža vadībā (p<0,001, rho=0,182).
Introduction. Fever is an increase in body temperature ≥38.0°C and is the most common reason why a child may be seeking medical attention. Fever is more often caused by self-limiting viral infections, which worsen the child's condition and causes anxiety in parents. Therefore, parents believe that body temperature should be kept within the normal range (36.1-37.5°C) which can be achieved by antipyretic use. Aim. Collect and analyze parents' views and understanding of fever and its treatment in children. Materials and methods. An online survey was performed to collect data from November 23, 2020 to November 27, 2020. The target audience was parents whose children are in the age group 0-17 years. The questionnaire included 18 questions on parents' age, place of residence, number of children, awareness of fever, tactics in case of fever, choice of antipyretics and their usage. The obtained data were collected in Microsoft Office 365 Excel and data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0. Results. A total of 549 parents participated in the study (mean age 33.07 years, SD±6.36 years). The majority of respondents were women (98.0%, n = 538) and more than half of parents lived in Rīga/Pierīga (52.1%, n=286). Half (50.1%, n = 275) considered fever to be in the range of 36.7-37.9°C. The temperature was more often measured in the armpit (70.1%, n=385) with a digital (39.7%, n=218) or mercury (37.5%, n=206) thermometer. Elevated temperature was considered harmful by four out of ten parents (39.0%, n=214). Almost all (95.6%, n=525) had turned to a medical professional for help with fever issues. Most common fever symptoms were warmth of skin (90.9%, n=499), chills (80.1%, n=440) and loss of appetite (60.3%, n=331). Antipyretics were used by the majority of respondents (92.3%, n=507), the most common ones were paracetamol (61.2%, n=336) and ibuprofen (84.2%, n=462). Prior to antipyretic therapy, parents ensured - adequate fluid intake and got rid of excess clothing (82.0%, n=450). Only 14.8% of parents gave antipyretics at the recommended temperature (≥ 39.0°C) (n=81). Antipyretics till 37.9°C were given three times more in Vidzeme (15.3%, n=84) than in Rīga/Pierīga (4.8%). Nevertheless, as parents got older, their knowledge of fever management increased (p<0.001, rho=0.182). Conclusion. Parents' knowledge of fever was insufficient, although almost all parents had turned to a medical professional for help. Half of the parents considered fever temperature to be lower than accepted and antipyretic treatment was applied sooner than recommended. Place of residence also played an important role in assessing the level of knowledge of fever therapy. In Vidzeme, compared to Riga/Riga district, parents were less informed.
