Presence of Ophthalmological Diseases during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

COVID-19 uzliesmojums visā pasaulē ir pārņēmis pasauli un medicīnas speciālistiem ir izvirzījis jaunus izaicinājumus veselības nozarē. Šī pārskata mērķis ir apkopot pašreiz pieejamos pierādījumus par COVID-19 un tā oftalmoloģiskajām sekām un izpausmēm, īpaši cilvēkiem, ar mērķi paātrināt labākas profilakses stratēģijas un izglītot oftalmoloģisko sabiedrību par šo tēmu. The outbreak of COVID-19 worldwide has overwhelmed the world and put forth new challenges in the health sector for medical professionals. The focus of this review is to encapsulate the evidence currently available on COVID-19 and its ophthalmic repercussions and expressions, particularly in humans, with the aim to expedite better prevention strategies and educate the ophthalmological community on this topic. An analysis of the literature uncovered that the results of some case studies point towards ocular symptoms frequently appearing in patients with more severe cases of COVID-19. Conjunctivitis alone is not a common manifestation of the disease, but it is the most common ocular manifestation. Transmission via ocular route is hypothesized. There is a need for bigger trials, and the ocular manifestations, especially the Neuro-ophthalmological and Retinal, need to be studied in greater detail, as there is yet to be any official consensus and elucidations on the pathogenetic mechanisms of the ocular manifestations of the nCOV-2.
