Abstract: Maģistra darbā “Telpas un vietas sasaiste ārstniecības iestādes teritorijā: Rīgas psihiatrijas un narkoloģijas centra gadījums” tiek aplūkota telpas un vietas konceptu izpratne un sasaiste Rīgas psihiatrijas un narkoloģijas centra (RPNC) ārtelpā – psihiatriskās aprūpes teritorijā.
Master thesis “Connection of space and place in medical institution outer environment: case study of the Riga Psychiatry and narcology centre” offers analysis of linkage between concepts space and place within perceptions of patients and their relatives, medical personnel, administrative personnel of Centre, and local community. The area of analysis is Centre’s outer environment which is under massive transformation and reconstruction at the moment from territory development perspective. The objective of the study is an assessment of existing environmental specifics and evaluate its future prospects taking under consideration the well-being of patients. To achieve the objective of study from empirical perspective 12 informants were interviewed; field research conducted via participant observation; and taken autoethnographic and psychogeography notes. Theoretical frame of the study interdisciplinary links together literature of social anthropology and medical anthropology. Main argument of study is that patients are trying to achieve sense of place while others offer them possibility of space. Division between space and place here is crucial, where place is perceived as personalized, individualized, permanent, detailed; while space is dynamic, variable, shared, impersonal. During the study it is possible to conclude that patients feel like guests in the area where they want to belong. Area is not fulfilling its therapeutical potential, and planned transformations are not radically changing this situation. The involvement of patients in planning process of environmental developments is a key necessity, while other groups (developers, medical personnel, community etc.) are focusing on building space for patients while there are striving for place and sense of place.
