To dibināja Vīnes ārsts Francs Josifs Galls (1758 – 1828). Viņš ticēja, ka cilvēka prāts sastāv no dažām atsevišķām daļām jeb t.s. | lv-LV |
dc.description.abstract | Phrenology is a science that measures person’s emotional and behavioural characteristics, as well as mental capacities, based on one’s shape and landscape of he skull. It was founded by Viennese physician Franz Joseph Gall (1758 – 1828). He believed that the human mind is composed of multiple distinct facilities (“organs”) in the brain cortex and each organ corresponded with a certain human characteristic, i.g., self-esteem, wit, combativeness etc. It was implied that the size of organs was directly linked to the degree of prevalence of respective characteristics. Organs that were used frequently grew in size while the ones that were neglected shrank. It was believed that the skull took its shape from the brain and its organs, hence they could be visibly examined as they formed hillocks and pits on the surface of the skull. Taking that into account, the landscape of the surface of a person’s skull could represent one’s character and mental capacities. Unfortunately though, all of this has been proven wrong and phrenology is now considered a pseudoscience, although the division of human brain by functional regions remains a fact (different parts of brain are indeed responsible for different mental functions). | en-UK |
