Abstract:
Globally, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) ranks as the third leading cause of death, and there is a notable rise in mortality associated with the disease. For many years, the disease was thought to almost exclusively be caused by tobacco smoke. However, since the 1950s, it has become apparent that different occupational exposures can also contribute significantly to its onset. This literature review aims to deepen the understanding of the association between COPD and occupational exposure in agriculture. By examining various types of exposures, the review evaluates the associated risks, impacts, and potential preventive measures. The results from the study indicate that COPD is often linked to occupational exposure to dust, smoke, or gas, with dust having a significant impact, while smoke and gas may have less pronounced effects. Organic dust is the predominant type of dust found in agriculture, and it’s the most hazardous type of dust. The study concludes that there is a significant correlation between occupational exposure in agriculture, particularly to specific agents like dust, and the development of COPD. The risk depends on the level of exposure and individual susceptibility. Preventative measures are crucial.
