Abstract:
This research paper presents a literature review on the challenges faced by societies due to an aging population, focusing on demographic shifts in European countries and the subsequent implications for the workforce. It discusses declining birth rates, increasing life expectancy, and the potential economic threats posed by these demographic changes. The paper highlights biases against older workers, absenteeism, presenteeism, and retirement as significant challenges in maintaining productivity among aging employees and retaining them beyond retirement age. The study aims to investigate these challenges and propose solutions to optimize the potential of an aging workforce. The methodology involves a systematic literature review using online databases and keywords related to aging workforce challenges, technological advancements, and policies. The hypothesis suggests that optimizing working conditions and leveraging technological advancements can help older employees remain productive beyond the current retirement age. Furthermore, interventional changes aimed at easing the workload for aging employees are discussed in detail. It outlines three key strategies: the Exposure-Documentation System for assessing workplace hazards, data analysis tools for streamlining workflow, and online training programs for enhancing skills and mental health. Additionally, it examines policies for increasing work ability and productivity, such as reducing absenteeism through counselling and recognition programs, accommodating aging workers by adjusting workloads and offering teleworking options, and prevention strategies to maintain physical and mental health. Overall, the study aims to contribute to the understanding and addresses the complex issues surrounding an aging workforce, explaining the importance of tailored interventions based on individual needs and highlights the potential benefits and challenges associated with each strategy.
