Abstract
Background: In the modern world the use and dominance of technologies is consistently increasing. Therefore, the professional and private use of computers is increasing as well and with this the incidence of diseases related to their use. These commonly include skin diseases which can affect a patient both physically and mentally. Aim: The aim of this work is to investigate computer related skin diseases and create an overview of these diseases. Method: This work is a literature review and was created by summarizing preexisting articles, studies and case reports about these diseases taken from online databases. Results: There are four groups of computer-related skin diseases: these go as following computer-related allergic contact dermatitis, screen dermatitis, laptop-induced erythema ab igne and friction- related dermatosis. Most of these can be treated with abstaining or limiting the use of computers. Computer-related allergic contact dermatitis is commonly caused due to allergens such as nickel, phthalates, resorcinol monobenzoate and rubber components. These can be found within the computer itself or in it’s accessories such as computer mice, mouse pads and more. Some patients might require pharmacological therapy. Screen dermatitis is a disease mostly found in patients with previously diagnosed skin conditions, especially rosacea. It consists of two groups of symptoms which include subjective and objective symptoms. For patients with underlying skin disease treatment mainly consists of the treatment of the underlying disease, otherwise stress-management might be an important factor. Laptop- induced erythema ab igne is an erythematous, net-like skin lesion caused by prolonged exposure to heat that is not sufficient enough to cause a burn. These temperatures are lying between 43-47°C and are generated by the laptop itself. Treatment is mainly non-pharmacological if lesions do not disappear pharmacological therapy can be used. Computer-related frictional diseases are caused by repeated friction, shear and moisture in between the skin and the computer or computer desks. The lesions are usually asymptomatic and only require treatment if they become symptomatic. This group is further subcategorized into computer palms, mouse fingers, mousing callus and keyboard wrist pads. Conclusion: There are several factors that can cause computer-related skin diseases. These can be associated with the computer itself, such as blue light within screen dermatitis or with the heat generated by laptops which is seen in laptop-induced erythema ab igne. It can also be related to the use of computer accessories such as computer mice, mouse pads and keyboard wrist rest which can primarily be seen in the frictional dermatitis. Computer-related allergic contact dermatitis can be due to accessories use or due to the computer itself. In the future there will probably be an increase in the prevalence of these diseases due to increasing use of computers within society.
