Abstract

The US-China rivalry provides for an interesting reading for international relations scholars. The relationship between the two superpowers continues to make headlines as each country tries to outdo the other at regional and international levels. Nowhere is this phenomenon more apparent than in the SCS where the Chinese are trying to diminish America’s influence and dominance in the region. On their part the Americans are trying their best to ensure their control and grip of the region remains unchallenged. Consequently, as the two wrestle for influence, nations in the SCS are being affected to a great extent. One such country is Vietnam which has been called the frontier of the war because Vietnamese SCS territories are at the center of the dispute between the US and China. To understand how the rivalry is playing out this study investigates the US-China rivalry through the disputes for Vietnamese SCS territories. It aims to discover the different aspects of Sino-American competition in the Asia Pacific region. It seeks to answer the question; what factors prompt the rivalry between the US and China in the South China Sea? It fulfils this by assessing neoclassical realism theory suitability for this study, establishing what entails strategic competition between great powers, comparing America’s policy towards China and China’s policy towards the US during President Trump’s administration, defining the factors that promote the rivalry between the two countries, and investigating the apparent outcomes of the rivalry. The study relies on a qualitative research approach and comprises three chapters. It concludes that economic and security interests are the main motivators behind the rivalry.
