Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) is associated with neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. There is a growing number of studies, that suggest preventive antiviral or therapeutic treatments as possible strategies, to prevent the onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease. Research paper - literature review “HSV-1 infection's role in pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease” provides insight into the connection between HSV-1 and development of Alzheimer's disease in various studies. Literature review contains information on the known pathogenesis and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, as well as epidemiology, structure and types of infection of HSV-1, which affects the processes of neurodegeneration. The literature review contains data from studies on the connection and possible mutual pathogenesis between Alzheimer's disease and HSV-1. Theories have been summarized about the ways how HSV - 1 can affect Alzheimer's disease - β-amyloid accumulation, tau protein hyperphosphorylation, the effects of HSV-1 - induced inflammation, oxidative stress, and host cell DNA damage. Studies using antiviral drugs such as Acyclovir, Valaciclovir and intravenous immunoglobulins have also been reviewed, evaluating their positive effects on patient clinical symptoms in relation to cognitive function. |
