Abstract
Aim: This literature review aims to investigate and explore the relationship between shift work and obesity, to analyse the factors contributing to obesity in individuals who work in shifts pattern with the goal of raising awareness and give practical methods to control weight during shift work. Overview: Shift work is a growing work pattern around the world, and it is very common among various occupations, as factory workers, health care providers and many more industry workers from all different age groups and genders. Shift work is a known risk factor that can promote obesity and other health and social problems. Obesity is a worldwide with increasing prevalence, causing life threating complication which can result in death. There are many factors that can promote obesity, one of them is different aspects in Shift work which make weight control harder. Methods: This literature review evaluate various studies regarding shift work, including negative effects of shift work on health and personal life, shift work impact on metabolism and circadian cycle, shift work and sleeping patterns, diet habits, obesity and its consequences, weight control in shift work. Results: The literature review show that there is a connection between shift work and obesity, shift work can negatively influence physiological mechanisms such as circadian cycle and sleeping patterns, and behavioural patterns such as eating behaviours, food choice and pattern of physical activity. Conclusion: Shift work is a risk factor for obesity, there is a need to increase the awareness of the employee and the employers, as obesity can increase risk for other health problems such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The main factors in shift work that contribute to obesity include disruption of circadian cycle and sleep pattern combined with behavioural changes such as unhealthy diet and lifestyle choices. Weight management in shift workers is a complex problem which require individual approach, success in weight management require actions both by the employee by changing lifestyle habits and the employer by promoting healthy lifestyle by education and actions in the workplace
