Abstract
The author of the study is Nima Mol Mattathil Kuriakose and the title of the study conducted is - Asthma control and factors associated with asthma control among adult smokers and non-smokers. The number of patients with uncontrolled asthma remains high, and factors associated with uncontrolled asthma are unknown (Naguyen, 2011). Moreover, poor asthma control is expensive, accounting for most of asthma-related health-care costs. A number of factors may contribute to sub-optimal asthma control (Haughney at al., 2008). The major significance of this research is to identify and explore the factors associated with asthma control. Identifying the risk factors associated with asthma such as smoking. And to find out whether smokers or non-smokers have more risk in asthma. The main aim of the study is to explore and compare asthma control and factors associated with asthma control among adult smokers and non-smokers. The study population are the population of Latvia who has suffered from bronchial asthma for at least 12 months. In Latvia, 2-5% of the population has asthma (Bērziņš, 2017). The accessibility method was used in the sample. This type of sample is determined by the fact that the sample will include participants who agree to participate voluntarily and are patients with bronchial asthma. Studies conducted in different countries indicate that insufficiently controlled or poorly controlled asthma may account for more than 50% of cases. Some studies report poorly controlled asthma in up to 90% of cases (Braido, 2013; Thomas et.al., 2009). The quantitative research method - questionnaires - was used in the study. Two types of questionnaires were used - created by the author and the ACT test. In total, 103 patients with asthma took part in the study, 51% of them are smokers, but 49% non – smokers. Results: Well-controlled asthma is only for 1/3 of asthma patients. Asthma control is slightly better for patients who do not smoke. There was no statistically significant difference in asthma control between smokers and non-smokers.
