Kopsavilkums
The bachelor’s thesis “Framing and Discourse in Cultural News of 360TV Ziņneši and LTV Panorāma” explores how cultural news is represented in two Latvian television news broadcasts – the public broadcaster LTV “Panorāma” and the commercial channel 360TV “360TV Ziņneši”. The aim of the study is to identify the dominant frames and discourses used in the cultural segments of both broadcasts and to compare their similarities and differences. The research applies qualitative methods – discourse and framing analysis – as well as semi-structured expert interviews. An analysis of cultural news stories over four different time periods revealed significant differences in approach. “Panorāma” focuses more on the societal importance and artistic value of culture, while “360TV Ziņneši” tends to present cultural events in a more accessible, emotional, and personality-driven manner. Special attention in the study is given to the media coverage of the animated film “Straume”, which serves as a case study to assess how prepared Latvian media are to cover large-scale cultural events with international recognition. This thesis is important because it addresses a relatively underexplored topic – the representation of cultural news in Latvian television. The findings illustrate how media shape public understanding of culture and highlight the influence of editorial decisions, journalistic expertise, and the broader media environment. The thesis also offers proposals for the development of cultural journalism, with an emphasis on education, professional training, and improving public engagement with culture.
