Surgical Fumes: Health Risks, Protective Measures and Perspectives

Abstract

In the world of medicine, surgical procedures are essential to save lives and treat diseases, but surgical fumes generated during these procedures pose an unseen possible danger. Components found in the generated smoke have proven health impacting characteristics, even carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic. The question arises if shot and long term health problems like respiratory irritation, eye irritation or serious diseases like cancer are correlated to the prolonged exposure to these gases. Specially at risk groups, including operating room personell, patients and surgeons should be aware of the risk and must receive education and proper personal protective equipment. Technological methods, personal protective equipment are already implemented into the day to day work and help to minimize the risk of exposure. But new ventilation technologies and customized guidelines should be taken in consideration, specially because long term effects are not well studied and researched. Occupational health and safety should be highest priority, specially in the hospital. You cannot heal in the same environment in which you become ill.
