Annotation Introduction. Numerous factors impact the mental health of students at university level. Academic workload leading to increased stress levels, new living environments and financial problems are all potential factors giving rise to anxiety among students. For international students, the cultural and environmental changes are generally bigger and could potentially lead to a higher prevalence of anxiety than its counterpart. The aim of this study was to analyse the level and reasons for anxiety among medical and non-medical students in Sweden and Latvia. The data was used to answer the hypotheses that the prevalence of anxiety is higher among medical students than in non-medical students as well as that international students in Latvia suffers from anxiety in a larger scale than students in Sweden. Methods. Data was collected from prior researches and compared with obtained results from a survey. The online survey contained a modified version of Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale-7 to assess the prevalence of anxiety among medical students in Latvia and students from various faculties in Sweden and also questions to assess the possible aetiologies behind the worrying of the students. Results. 141 participants were included in the study. 61.0% (n=86) female students and 39.0% (n=55) male students. 54.6% (n=77) were students from Riga Stradins University, Latvia and 45.4% (n=64) from different universities of Sweden. 66.7% (n=94) studied medicine and 33.3% (n=47) were non-medical students. 22.7% (n=32) of the participants had no anxiety, 28.4% (n=40) showed signs of mild anxiety, 25.5% (n=36) showed signs of moderate anxiety and 23.4% (n=33) displayed signs of severe anxiety. No statistical significance was found when comparing the prevalence of anxiety in medical students and non-medical students, neither when comparing international students in Latvia with students in Sweden. Females were found to have a statistically significant higher prevalence of anxiety in comparison with males and the most common aetiological factor leading to worrying among the students were approaching academic events. Conclusions. The prevalence of anxiety differed depending on demographical factors and the total prevalence of anxiety among the participants was considerably higher than among the general population. Despite the fact that many statistically insignificant results were obtained, they showed tendencies towards a higher prevalence of anxiety among international students and medical students. However, for Swedish medical students a lower anxiety prevalence was found. For future studies, a larger sampling size with a homogenous distribution of semesters among the participants is needed.
