Kopsavilkums
The title of the bachelor’s thesis is: The role of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the implementation of Serbia’s political interests in Montenegro from 2016 to 2021. Although the involvement of national churches in politics is infrequently studied, especially with a focus on the Western Balkans, their role is particularly important. In several European countries, we can observe that the churches engage in the politics by expressing their position or being actively involved in defending its interests. Montenegro is one of the countries where in the past few years the Serbian Orthodox Church has intensified its activities in the context of various political issues. According to the President of Montenegro, Milo Dukanovic, the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro is acting in Serbia's political interests to prevent Montenegro from distancing itself from Serbia. A qualitative research method and document analysis will be used to examine whether the public position expressed by the Serbian Orthodox Church contributes to Serbia's foreign policy interests and their implementation in Montenegro. In the empirical part, a closer analysis of media articles, interviews, publications of the Serbian Orthodox Church will be analyzed to reflect on the church's statements and activities in the context of Montenegro’s political issues. The bachelor's thesis is developed with a theoretical framework from the IR theory of constructivism. In addition, the paper provides an insight into the relationship between Serbian state institutions and the Serbian Orthodox Church, as well as describes Serbia's foreign policy interests and their links with Montenegro. The hypothesis put forward in the bachelor's thesis was confirmed. The analytical part of the thesis concluded that the public position of the Serbian Orthodox Church promotes Serbia's foreign policy interests in Montenegro. The main foreign policy interest of Serbia, which repeats throughout the activities and rhetoric of the Serbian Orthodox Church, is the preservation and protection of the existence of the Serbia and Serb peoples, regardless of their place of residence, as well as the preservation of Serbian national minorities and their cultural, religious, and historical identity abroad. This is a fundamental interest which encourages both Serbia and the Serbian Orthodox Church to engage in Montenegrin politics in an effort to pursue their specific interests to the benefit of the Serbian people.
