Kopsavilkums
Rezultāti un secinājumi: Pētījuma rezultāti atklāj, no aptaujātajiem respondentiem 50,0% (n=26) atzina, ka ķīmijterapijas laikā viņiem bija novērojamas ožas izmaiņas, savukārt otra puse - 50,0% (n=26) - šādas izmaiņas nenovēroja.

Bachelor's Thesis "Changes in Taste and Smell Perception and Their Impact on the Nutrition of Oncology Patients During Chemotherapy" The thesis was developed to study changes in taste and smell perception among oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy and to evaluate the impact of these changes on dietary habits and nutrition. The relevance of the study is based on the fact that taste and smell disorders are common side effects of chemotherapy, significantly impairing patients' intake of nutrients and potentially leading to nutritional deficiencies, thereby affecting the effectiveness of treatment and quality of life. Research Aim: To study changes in taste and smell perception among oncology patients during chemotherapy and to assess the impact of these changes on dietary habits. Research Methods: The study was conducted at Riga East Clinical University Hospital, surveying 52 chemotherapy patients. Quantitative descriptive cross-sectional methods were used. Data were collected using questionnaires that assessed changes in taste and smell perception, dietary habit changes, and malnutrition risks. The effects of chemotherapy on taste receptor function and smell perception were analyzed in relation to patients’ food consumption, nutritional intake changes, and malnutrition risks. Results and Conclusions: The study results revealed that 50.0% (n=26) of the surveyed respondents reported experiencing changes in smell perception during chemotherapy, while the other half - 50.0% (n=26) - did not observe such changes. Additionally, 42.3% (n=22) of respondents stated that food tasted different to them, while 57.7% (n=30) indicated that they did not perceive changes in food taste. Furthermore, 21.2% (n=11) reported an increased consumption of fresh fruits, 32.7% (n=17) discontinued the intake of nuts, and 17.3% (n=9) noted an increase in the consumption of white meat. A significant portion, 46.2% (n=24), indicated that they had increased their intake of fish and seafood products. On the other hand, 32.7% (n=17) of respondents admitted to reducing their consumption of cow's milk, while 17.3% (n=9) completely discontinued its use. Based on the results obtained, it is evident that changes in taste and smell during chemotherapy pose significant challenges to ensuring adequate nutrition for oncology patients. The thesis consists of 66 pages, with 51 pages excluding appendices. It includes 21 figures, 3 tables, and 8 appendices. Keywords: taste changes, smell changes, nutrition during chemotherapy, dietary changes.
