Kopsavilkums
Aktualitāte: Ergoterapeiti praksē bieži sastopas ar cilvēkiem, kuru funkcionālās grūtības sakņojas kompleksās traumās (Mason and Stagnitti, 2022).
Topicality: In practice, occupational therapists (OT) frequently work with clients whose functional difficulties are rooted in complex trauma (Mason and Stagnitti, 2022). Such trauma can significantly impact a person’s overall functioning (Ford and Courtois, 2020). For therapy to be effective, OT must be able to recognize the effects of trauma and adapt their approach to the client’s individual needs (van der Kolk, 2015). International literature emphasizes the important role of occupational therapy in working with this target group; however, in Latvia, there is still a lack of data on how OT themselves perceive their professional preparedness for such practice. Therefore, it is necessary to explore how they evaluate their competencies and identify the challenges and professional development needs in working with people affected by complex trauma. The aim of the study: to explore the professional experience of Latvian OT in working with people who have experienced complex trauma, focusing on how therapists subjectively perceive and evaluate knowledge and competencies in this field, as well as the challenges and professional development needs they identify in working with this target group. Reaserch methods: a qualitative research approach with a phenomenological design was applied. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight occupational therapists practicing in Latvia. During the interviews, participants shared their insights and practical experiences. The collected data were analyzed using thematic content analysis to identify key themes related to experience, knowledge, competencies, and development needs in the context of trauma. Results: most Latvian OT lack specific knowledge and skills in working with clients who have experienced complex trauma. Participants pointed to a limited understanding of the issue, a lack of guidelines, and a strong need for targeted education and methodological support. Conclusions: Latvian OT express a clear need for more in-depth knowledge when collaborating with individuals affected by complex trauma. Trauma-informed approaches applied only fragmentarily, based on individual professional experience. To ensure high-quality rehabilitation, it is essential to improve both educational content and professional guidelines in this field.
