Kopsavilkums

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The daily work of a surgeon is accompanied by a variety of different risks with effects on their health. Biological hazards play a major role in threatening surgeon’s health and can cause acute and chronic diseases. There are options to decrease the risk of infection and to monitor infection processes after contaminated injuries. Even though there are safety measures many surgeons not always apply them and put their health behind the patients’ health. AIM: To sum up the most common biological hazards and the way of infection as well as to compare different approaches to decrease health risks and how to monitor occupational injuries with risk of contagion. METHODOLOGY: Different literature sources were used to consolidate information about the topic. The sources are surveys, medical books, medical dictionaries, journals, and scientific research papers form medical archives or medical websites. Most of the sources were found on the internet from all over the world with an emphasis on European (Germany, United Kingdome) sources. KEY RESULTS: Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus, and human immunodeficiency virus are the most common pathogens causing occupational infection in surgeons. Needlestick injuries are the main route of entry for the biological hazards. Surgical smoke contains viable biohazards and can result in diseases like laryngeal papilloma. Precaution measures can decrease the risk of infection and when combined surgeons can reduce risks to minimal values. In many cases surgeons do not apply precaution measures and do not follow up injuries to observe possible infections. Patients in the operating room (OR) appeared to be tested positive for blood-borne diseases more often than expected incidences in the community resulting in higher biological hazard risk for surgeons. CONCLUSION: Biological hazards are a threat to the surgeon’s health. Even though there are many precaution measures to reduce the risk of infection and treatment options there is nothing what can protect a surgeon from contracting an infection in absolute manners due to occupational injuries or inhaling smoke. Insufficient application of safety measures to prevent infections result in an unnecessary higher risk for infection.
