Individual Factors and Psycho-social Factors affecting Susceptibility to Stress at Work in Hospitals

Abstract

This literature review examines the individual and psychosocial factors that can affect hospital workers' susceptibility to stress. It explores the impact of age, gender, personality traits, work organization, position, and salary on stress susceptibility among healthcare professionals. The review includes case studies, meta-analysis, and cohort studies from different countries. The findings suggest that healthcare workers who are female, younger, less experienced, closer to retirement, working overtime and/or night shifts, and earning less than in other sectors are more susceptible to occupational stress. The review also discusses possible solutions to decrease stress levels and susceptibility. However, the different systems of measuring stress and the subjectivity of surveyed workers pose limitations in comparing studies.
