Abstract
Abstract Empathy is a person’s ability to understand and feel the emotional distress of others (Slavny & Moore, 2018). In the health care sector it is very important for professionals caring patients (Petrucci et al., 2016). Nurses with the lack of empathy don’t have the ability to communicate effectively with the patients or their working team (Terezam et al., 2017). Nurse empathy could be influenced by personal or social demographic differences such as gender, work experience and specification (Navarro-Abal et al., 2018). Lack of experience among health care professionals can increase stress level or tension at the workplace, which could have a direct impact on the communication style of healt care staff as well as their empathy (Dobbs et al., 2014). The aim of bachelor’s work was to determine the correlation between empathy rate and work experience of internal care nurses. To achieve the aim, a study hypothesis has been raised: internal care nurses with longer work experience have higher indicators of empathy. The obtained results show that the raised hypothesis did not confirm. In the internal care nurses selection for work experience, age, level of education, workload there is negative, weak commitment with the average rate of empathy, but the obtained results are not statistically significant (p>0,05). The research method used in bachelor work is Empathy Quotien ( The Empathy Quotient, Baron-Cohen S., & Wheelwright S., 2004) and a demographic questionnaire for internal care nurses, which was developed by the author of the work. 130 internal care nurses working in one of the Latvia’s “X” multi-profile hospitals participated in this research.
