Background: Endodontic therapy is often referred to as root canal treatment. It is a procedure that entails removing an infection from the tooth's root canal system. The procedure is successful because it relies heavily on very effective irrigation methods. Irrigation is an assistant to mechanical instrumentation and is essential in ensuring the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
Aim: To review the literature on endodontic irrigation methods and solutions, focusing on evaluating and comparing the different irrigants and techniques used in modern dentistry and evaluating the varying effects on the success rates of root canal treatments. Method: Find relevant studies using multiple scientific databases. The databases used were PubMed and Wiley Online Library to carefully sort out research articles published from the last 10 years to be included in the current literature review.
Conclusion: Irrigation in endodontic therapy successfully disinfects and cleans the root canal system. The choice of an irrigation solution and method massively impacts the treatment outcome. Understanding irrigation's methods, purpose, and challenges helps clinicians improve their endodontic practice and patient outcomes. Technological advancements and ongoing research continue to refine irrigation methods and provide new chances to address complex root canal therapy to achieve improved clinical results.
