Kopsavilkums

Bakalaura darba autors: Ieva Loreta Reide Bakalaura darba zinātniskais vadītājs: Prof. Dr. sc. Inf.
Author of the bachelor’s thesis: Ieva Loreta Reide Scientific supervisor of the bachelor’s thesis: Prof. Dr. sc. Inf. Sergejs Kruks Bachelor’s thesis title: “Memories and photos of soldiers during the Soviet era and today” The work analyzes how the collection, preservation, and representation of soldiers' memories have changed in two time periods - during the Soviet Union and today. More specifically, the visual memory culture of soldiers is studied, focusing on Soviet demobilization albums and contemporary photographs of soldiers, both in Latvia and Canada. During the Soviet era, these demobilization albums preserved the soldiers' time of service, creating collective memory, a sense of community, tradition and material access. However, today it is not fully known how and where soldiers preserve their service memories. This is important because it helps to understand how exactly the process of preserving and representing memories has changed at different times, by examining how soldiers have documented their service experiences at different times, what meaning is given to them and what forms are selected. This allows us to compare contemporary and past visual culture and, of course, also gain insight into how the processes of documentation and preservation are changing. These visual materials, albums and photographs, are important memory preservers that record personal experiences. To gain a deeper insight into how soldiers themselves perceive the preservation of memories and what their meaning is, semi-structured interviews are used, as well as semiotic analysis, which helps interpret the meaning and thought of the photograph. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that both during the Soviet era and today, visual materials play a significant role in the construction of collective and individual memory, but as times have changed, their function and use have changed. The structure of the bachelor's thesis consists of an introduction, an annotation, a theoretical part with four subcategories, methodology, research results, discussion, conclusions, and a list of literature. The theoretical part examines the preservation of memories and its types, focusing on collective and individual memory; photography as material evidence; the semiotics of photography, specifically the connotative and denotative aspects, and also vernacular photography, since the connotative aspect of photography will be analyzed from its point of view. The second part, the methodology, describes the course of the research, how the semi-structured interviews and photographs were analyzed. The work concludes with conclusions and discussion.
