Abstract
Introduction: There is an increasing incidence of musculoskeletal diseases among health care professionals lately. Studies have shown that the most affected group are nurses, but among the physicians working in the hospital, surgeons are more prevalent. Which types of surgeries are more prevalent for the development of musculoskeletal diseases? Which type of problems occur in surgeons? What are risk factors? Methodology: For the collection of the relevant data, already conducted studies from 2001 until 2021 were used, as well as E-books, hardback books and internet sources. The respective literature was evaluated according to the importance on the topic of musculoskeletal diseases. Results: Studies have shown that surgeons are more predisposed for developing musculoskeletal diseases due to their daily workload. It depends mainly on predisposing risk factors and the surgical option, open or minimally invasive, which problems are arising in the surgeon. In this literature review different studies have shown that surgeons are the most affected group in case of musculoskeletal problems among hospital physicians. Surgeons performing open surgeries are more prone to neck, back and upper extremity problems. Whereas surgeons performing minimally invasive surgeries showed more commonly neck and upper extremity diseases. The most common problem among all surgeons were spine diseases, mainly lumbar spine diseases, followed by upper extremity diseases, like carpal tunnel syndrome and lower extremity diseases, which were not further specified. Another study evaluated different risk factors in surgeons which were predisposing for the development of musculoskeletal diseases, like decreased muscular strength, age over 55 years, female gender, right-handed surgeons, smokers and obese surgeons with a BMI over 25 kg/m2. Work related risk factors were assessed by using WERA method according to open, laparoscopic and microsurgical methods, as well as environmental factors, which contributed to the development of musculoskeletal diseases in surgeons. Conclusion: In conclusion, surgeons showed more prevalence in the development of diseases related to the musculoskeletal system due to different risk factors related to their daily work.
