Abstract
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed oncological disease in women not only in Latvia, but also worldwide; furthermore, it is among the main causes of death in women who have been previously diagnosed with cancer. Since the breast cancer screening attendance rate remains quite low and does not meet requirements established by the European Commission, the aim of this research was to determine and evaluate the data regarding breast cancer screening attendance in women aged 50 to 69, their awareness of the importance of screening and to identify the main reasons of unattendance. According to the results of the survey, the attendance of the participants tends to be higher than in general population. Lack of time, discomfort and pain during the procedure, distance to the nearest medical institution, opinion that the screening is not relevant/important, not receiving the invitation letter and unavailability of the screening mammography were the main reasons for unattendance mentioned by the participants. Respondents were of the opinion that encouragement of gynecologist and, especially, their general practitioner (GP) would be the most effective method to improve the attendance to breast cancer screening mammography.
