Kopsavilkums

The aim of the study was to explore the relationship between anxiety and body awareness indicators in women. The study formulated three research questions: Is there a relationship between anxiety and body awareness in women? What is the correlation between age groups and anxiety and body awareness in women? And finally, which aspects of body awareness are significantly related to anxiety in women? A total of 111 participants with Latvian as their native language, aged from 18 to 81 years (M = 42.21, SD = 20.52, 100% women), participated in the study. The Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA) (Mehling, W. E., 2018, adapted into Latvian by Krizska-Popova, D., & Majore-Dūšele, I., 2020) was used to assess body awareness, and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales Anxiety subscale (DASS) (Lovibond, S. H., & Lovibond, P. F., 1995; adapted into Latvian by Ozoliņa, Z., Mārtinsone, K., & Perepjolkina, V., n.d.) was used for anxiety assessment. Both questionnaires were combined by the author and were available to complete online in electronic form via a link. The results showed a statistically significant moderate negative correlation between body awareness and anxiety (rs = -0.273, p < 0.01). Statistically significant moderate negative correlations were also found between anxiety levels and MAIA subscales — Noticing, Not-Distracting, Not-Worrying, Self-Regulation, Trusting (rs ranging from -0.30 to -0.41, p < 0.01). The correlations with Attention Regulation, Emotional Awareness, and Body Listening were weaker and statistically nonsignificant (p > 0.05). Linear regression analysis showed that lower Not-Distracting (β = -0.39), Not-Worrying (β = -0.36), and Self-Regulation (β = -0.18) significantly predicted higher anxiety levels (p < 0.05), emphasizing the importance of emotional self-regulation in anxiety symptom formation. It was found that the age group significantly affects body awareness levels (H = 23.47, p < 0.001), with significant differences between age groups. The study concluded that there is a statistically significant negative correlation between body awareness and anxiety, particularly in dimensions such as Noticing, Not-Distracting, Not-Worrying, Self-Regulation, Trusting, and Noticing-Distraction, while the age group comparison showed that younger women (18–25 years) have higher anxiety levels and lower body awareness compared to older age groups. Keywords: body awareness, anxiety, situational anxiety, general anxiety
