Kopsavilkums
Rezultāti: Vecāki, kuriem iepriekš nebija MID pieredzes, par to uzzināja tikai interviju laikā.
Introduction: With an increasing understanding of caries etiology, WHO has recommended prioritizing minimally invasive methods for caries control. Despite this, MID methods have not yet been integrated into Latvia's public dental sector, and their use in clinical practice remains limited. Studies have identified several barriers to the implementation of MID, including challenges related to dental professionals, the state healthcare system, and attitudes of both children and their parents toward treatment methods. This study analyzed parental attitudes toward non-invasive and minimally invasive caries treatment strategies for children, while also identifying the facilitating factors and barriers for implementing MID in Latvia. Methods: A scoping review was conducted for the literature review, while a qualitative research methodology was used to explore parents' attitudes towards MID. This involved 19 semi-structured interviews with parents whose children had received MID treatment in a clinical study (Maldupa, Innes, et al., 2024), as well as with parents whose children had undergone traditional dental treatment at the RSU Institute of Dentistry. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, coded, and analyzed using a focused approach. Results: Parents who had no prior experience with MID methods learned about them only during the interviews. Overall, parents perceive the availability of MID methods positively, as they offer effective alternatives that can reduce the child’s discomfort and help avoid treatment under general anesthesia. When evaluating the proposed methods, three categories influencing parental choice emerged: effectiveness, convenience and execution of the method, and visual appearance and aesthetics. Internal contradictions were observed both between different methods and within the same method. These contradictions were linked to the child’s and parents’ previous dental experiences, their perceptions of treatment definitions and successful outcomes, as well as their attitude toward treatment under general anesthesia. Conclusions: Parents in Latvia show interest and a positive attitude towards using MID methods for primary tooth treatment; however, the existing lack of information and availability is the main barrier to their implementation in clinical practice.
