Kopsavilkums

This literature review explores the role of the gut microbiome in the pathogenesis of depression, emphasizing the gut-brain axis mechanisms, consequences of dysbiosis, and inflammatory processes affecting the central nervous system. The analysis is based on scientific publications from the past decade, highlighting disruptions in tryptophan metabolism, microglial activation, and antibiotic-induced microbiota changes. Both human and animal studies are examined, demonstrating the microbiota's influence on mood, synaptic plasticity, and neuroinflammation. The aim is to understand how alterations in the microbiome contribute to depression development and to evaluate therapeutic strategies, including the use of probiotics and prebiotics. Current evidence suggests that microbiota modulation could become a valuable adjunct in depression treatment; however, larger and more methodologically rigorous studies are still needed.
