Kopsavilkums

Bachelor's Thesis Title: A systematic literature review: assessment methods for identifying stress and anxiety in patients with stuttering. Research Problem: Stuttering affects not only motor aspects but is also significantly associated with psychological factors such as stress and anxiety, which can impact speech quality and an individual's emotional well-being. Therefore, it is crucial for audiologists and speech therapists to understand and implement effective stress assessment methods to develop therapeutic approaches that mitigate the effects of stress and anxiety on patients and improve their quality of life. Research Aim: To systematically compile and analyze available scientific articles on the most commonly used instruments for assessing stress and anxiety in patients with stuttering. Research Question: What are the most commonly used instruments for assessing stress and anxiety in patients with stuttering? Research Methods: The databases used for data collection include PubMed, ScienceDirect, EBSCOhost. The study includes open-access full-text studies that are no older than 15 years and meet the inclusion criteria. The systematic literature review involves both quantitative (PRISMA) and qualitative (JBI) analyses, as well as narrative data synthesis. Results: An analysis of eight relevant studies identified six commonly used assessment tools for evaluating stress and anxiety in individuals who stutter: UTBAS, OASES, STAI, BFNE-S and LSAS. These instruments are most frequently used to assess social anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, and emotional and behavioral responses in speech situations. Several studies revealed a strong correlation between negative thoughts about stuttering and elevated anxiety levels. Conclusions: Stuttering is often accompanied by heightened social anxiety, which can affect the effectiveness of therapy and the individual's well-being. The UTBAS and OASES tools stand out as particularly valuable for speech-language therapists, as they allow for a detailed evaluation of both the intensity of anxiety and the emotional and cognitive reactions related to speech. Screening for stress and anxiety is essential for developing psychologically tailored therapy for individuals who stutter.
