Kopsavilkums
Bachelor’s thesis “Documentary photo serie: Gulbene – Alūksne narrow gauge railway inheritance” is a creative work, where is created series of photograph about the last still actively running narrow gauge railway in the Baltics. The aim of the thesis is to create documentary photo series about this specific industry, environment, to visually portray it and later preserve it as a heritage. The photo series consist of 17 photographs, documented both at the Gulbene railway depot and on the Gulbene – Alūksne railway route and stations. In addition to the photographs, there are oral history interviews that is set with various participants (railway employees, regular passengers). The aim of this method is to obtain interesting facts, events, personal perspectives and experiences related to narrow gauge railway. Afterwards there have been selected quotes from these interviews to be added to the photographs as a description for the exhibition format. This photo series will definitely be able to be as a part of the Gulbene – Alūksne narrow gauge railway heritage archive in the future. In addition, it can also be used as exhibition material. Currently the first exhibition of the photo series is planned for early September of 2025 – during the Bānītis Festival. The relevance of the work also is justified by the fact that nowadays such an industrial object as this one is a great rarity, so it is worth capturing and preserving it while it is still possible. In order to complete the work, firstly is found and collected the theoretical material – the most important about documentary photography and photography as a method of visual represation and communication, and of course information about oral history interviews and local history research methods. In the practical part, based on the theoretical information, the photo series is created – both from documentation and oral history interviews. As a result, photo series is created to be used both as a heritage archive and material to be used for the exhibition.
