Kopsavilkums
The bachelor's thesis “Opinion analysis on threats to quality journalism: a case study of public media (LTV) and private media (TV3)” analyzes the changes in public attitudes toward journalists in Latvia, with a particular focus on attacks and negative reactions, as well as the impact of various global events on the quality of journalists' professional work. The aim of the research is to determine how journalists from Latvian Television (LTV) and TV3 perceive their professional role, what challenges they face, how these affect the quality of journalism, and how public attitudes have changed following major global events in the second decade of the 21st century (2022–2025). The study is based on the theory of social responsibility, which emphasizes the role of media in a democratic society and their responsibility to the public. The empirical part of the research uses two methods: a quantitative survey and qualitative semi-structured interviews with two journalists from LTV, two from TV3, and one from Re:Baltica. The respondents were selected based on previously known information about specific situations in their professional activities. The survey analyzes journalists’ opinions on self-censorship, negative feedback from the public and politicians, sense of security, and work motivation, while the interviews provide in-depth insight into personal experiences and emotional impact. The research results reveal that a significant number of journalists have experienced negative public reactions, which have intensified over the past three years compared to the pre-pandemic period. There is notable public polarization, cases of self-censorship, and ongoing efforts to strengthen public trust in the media and maintain the quality of journalism. At the same time, it becomes evident that journalists still possess a sense of mission and continue their work despite various difficulties, challenges, and tests. The thesis provides insight into the current situation in journalism, as well as possible solutions to improve the quality of journalism and strengthen public trust in the media.
