ABSTRACT
Background: Cognitive health in medical professionals is a crucial component in daily clinical practice. Yet the medical profession itself tends to impact cognition in many ways. External occupational stressors and subsequent internal neurological risks are great threats to the cognitive decline of physicians, increasing the risks of medical malpractice and endangering patient safety. The medical profession also creates protective mechanisms in the form of cognitive benefits, and together with a wide range of occupational interventions, the safeguarding and amplification of cognitive health in physicians should be a key priority in occupational medicine and environmental medicine.
Aim: The aim of this thesis is to explore the impact on cognitive health as a result of working in the medical profession and understand the various risk factors, protective mechanisms, and evidence-based occupational interventions and recommendations.
Objectives: The objectives of this thesis are to analyze and compare the cognitive risks and benefits that are related to working within the medical profession, to investigate protective and preventive interventions at both individual and systemic levels, and finally, to recognize the biological, clinical and diagnostic aspects of cognitive decline in healthcare professionals.
Methods: This thesis is based on a literature review. Scientific sources addressing the impact of the medical profession on cognitive health were identified, analyzed and evaluated. Relevant peer-reviewed publications were retrieved through online databases such as ScienceDirect, PubMed, Google Scholar and ClinicalKey, along with other credible and recognized medical sources.
Hypothesis: It was hypothesized that medical professionals are at an increased risk of cognitive decline due to occupational stressors. However, targeted interventions and systemic reforms can alleviate these effects and divert focus towards neuroplasticity.
Conclusion: Cognitive decline in medical professionals is influenced through both external occupational stressors and internal neuropsychological mechanisms. However, evidence suggests that these effects can be mitigated through individual coping strategies, supportive organizational environments, and ethical monitoring frameworks. Promoting cognitive well-being should be recognized as a key component of sustainable and safe healthcare practice.
