Kopsavilkums
Energy drinks contain caffeine, taurine, and other substances that can affect human health. However, the effects of these drinks on sleep quality have not been well studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between energy drinks consumption and sleep quality among master's students at the Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences of Riga Stradiņš University. For the cross-sectional study to collect data was used a questionnaire, including questions about energy drink consumption, and to determine the sleep quality of the respondent the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used. In total, 81 students were surveyed using the questionnaire method, but after excluding students who used sleeping pills, 66 respondents remained. Male and older students had a significantly higher average frequency of energy drink consumption compared to female and younger students. 38,8% of the students had poor sleep quality, of which 69% were energy drink users, but no significant relationship was found between sleep quality and energy drink consumption. However, an association was found between energy drink consumption and loud snoring and coughing. The results showed that energy drink consumption had no statistically significant association with sleep quality. More studies with a larger sample of Latvian university students are needed to determine the extent of sleep problems.
