Kopsavilkums
Research title: Testing the psychometric properties of the Latvian version of “EAT-10” assessment tool Research problem: “EAT-10” is an internationally used and validated assessment tool known for its strong internal consistency and high test-retest reliability. However, the Latvian version has certain drawbacks that need to be addressed to ensure the tool’s full accuracy. Aim of this research: To improve the Latvian version of the “EAT-10” assessment tool and to evaluate its psychometric properties in patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia of various etiologies. Research methods: A quantitative cross-sectional pilot study was conducted. The study included 41 patients who were hospitalised at Riga East University Hospital during the study period. Initially, five items of “EAT-10” were translated and culturally adapted based on the guidelines provided by the Psychology Laboratory of Riga Stradiņš University. The collected data was processed using IBM SPSS Statistics, where descriptive statistics and psychometric properties of the tool were performed. Research instrument: The latvian version of “EAT-10” assessment tool Research objectives: 1. Re-translate and culturally adapt five items of the “EAT-10” assessment tool. 2. Determine the internal consistency of the latvian version of “EAT-10” assessment tool. 3. Assess the test-retest reliability of the latvian version of “EAT-10” assessment tool. 4. Evaluate the criterion validity of the latvian version of “EAT-10” assessment tool. 5. Calculate the mean scores and standard deviations of the test results within the sample. Research results: The internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach’s alpha) indicated good internal consistency (0,887). The test-retest reliability coefficient (Spearman rho) showed very high reliability (0,932). Weighted Kappa coefficients for individual items ranged from 0,548 to 0,931, indicating reliability from moderate to nearly excellent. To assess criterion validity, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used, which showed no significant difference over time (p = 0,304), suggesting that the tool does not significantly detect changes in symptoms over time. Conclusion: The latvian version of “EAT-10” assessment tool has high reliability, good internal consistency and it is able to discriminate between individuals with and without dysphagia. In the particular study sample, it is statistically insignificant in detecting changes in symptoms over time.
