ANNOTATION Background. The topicality of the topic of the diploma thesis, related to the current trends, which characterize the rapidly increasing proportion of elderly people, the uncertainty of nutrition and the related increase in the prevalence of osteoarthritis. Objective. To evaluate the dietary habits of individuals with osteoarthritis and to ascertain their understanding of the role of diet in the alleviation of osteoarthritis symptoms and prevention. Methods. The quantitative method used is a cross-sectional design. The study included 74 persons diagnosed with osteoarthritis. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used. Respondents were asked to complete a questionnaire to ascertain dietary habits. To ascertain respondents' perception of the role of diet on symptom reduction and prevention of osteoarthritis, they were asked to answer additional questions attached to the questionnaire. Microsoft Excel and SPSS software were used for data analysis and processing. Results. The assessment of the dietary habits of the respondents showed that a majority of 65% of the respondents have insufficient vegetables consumption, 76% have insufficient fish intake, 68% have insufficient dairy products consumption, and 96% have insufficient nuts and seeds intake. The whole group of respondents has an insufficient daily intake of cereals and 28% have an increased salt intake. Assessing the respondents' understanding of the impact of diet on alleviating osteoarthritis symptoms and its prevention, the results showed that the majority of respondents are uninformed about this issue. Conclusions: 1. Most respondents do not consume enough key food groups that are essential for osteoarthritis prevention and symptom reduction. 2. Most respondents do not understand appropriate healthy diets for the treatment and prevention of osteoarthritis. There is a need to promote education and awareness-raising for people with osteoarthritis.
