Abstract

This research paper explores how emotional dysregulation is connected to physical symptoms in people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Through a systematic literature review, the study looks at how stress-related biological systems—like the HPA axis and autonomic nervous system—contribute to unexplained somatic complaints such as chronic pain, fatigue, and digestive issues.

By reviewing recent research from 2019 to 2025 and applying a thematic analysis, the paper highlights how emotional distress in BPD often shows up physically, which can lead to misdiagnosis and frequent visits to healthcare services. The findings also suggest that current treatments often miss the mark by focusing only on emotional or physical symptoms separately.

Instead, the study advocates for an integrated, biopsychosocial approach that addresses both mental and physical health. This perspective could lead to more accurate diagnoses, better patient care, and improved treatment outcomes for those living with BPD.
