Abstract
The research was developed by Santa Koraļkeviča, a 5th year student at the RSU Faculty of Pharmacy. Thesis topic: Analysis of the possibilities of using pectin substances in maintaining health. Pectic substances are widely used not only in food industry, but also in pharmaceutical industry. With the rise of food supplement market, a lot of information is available about beneficial effects of pectin on the body and its versatile therapeutic properties. This study is dedicated to clarify these statements. The aim of the study was to investigate the evidence-based usage of pectin in health maintaining. The study concluded that pectin substances have a helpful effect as a treatment of diarrhea, as well as their possibility to make a beneficial effect on blood cholesterol and glucose levels and on the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Pectic substances also can be used for other purposes, for example, to reduce the duration of niacin-induced flushing and reduce the risk of developing atopic dermatitis in infants. Regarding the situation in Latvia: there are no medicines in the register of medicines which contain pectin as an active substance; in the register of food supplements found 30 products that contain pectin as a physiologically active substance, but only in 2 of them amount of pectin and the intended use comply with one of the health claims on food approved by the European Commission.
