Kopsavilkums

Background: Dementia is a disease that occurs particularly in individuals over the age of 65. In this disease, those affected may experience a decline in the function of their brain over a period of time. Sometimes this change can be steady but sometimes the decline can be faster. Over time, living conditions have improved, leading to a higher life expectancy. This, in turn, has led more people being diagnosed with dementia. An increase in life expectancy and general health of individuals, has also led to an increase in the retirement age for individuals leading to a longer work life with people retiring at the age of between 65 and 67, with many individuals still choosing to work longer if health permits. Aim: To assess the prevalence of undiagnosed dementia in the working population over 60 years of age and whether this affects work in undiagnosed individuals. Hypothesis: There is an existence of undiagnosed dementia in some individuals over the age of 60 who are still working. Method: This research paper has been constructed in the form of a literature review. Search criteria were approved by a clinical librarian. The primary sources of literature used for this review have been scientific journals from databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, Medline and Embase. Results: Review of this literature defined the general characteristics of dementia, diagnostic methods for dementia, the effects of dementia, and effective interventional and preventive strategies for managing dementia in the workplace. Conclusion: Undiagnosed dementia appears to exist in the workplace. Individuals start with very slight symptoms of memory loss and poor concentration which initially can be put down to normal “mistakes”. However, over time when these accumulate and become increasingly worse, they pose a more significant problem. These early problems can be detected through questionnaires and then, with the help of the employer, managed effectively to make workplace modifications for the employee. This can benefit both the employer and the employee, if guidelines developed on the basis of research are followed and additional support is provided from occupational therapists and social workers.
