Kopsavilkums

Acute rheumatic fever is considered rare in developed countries due to the availability of primary and secondary prophylaxis. However, the prevalence in developing countries is still remarkedly high. Here the primary and secondary prophylaxis is not readily available. With the mass immigration from developing countries to Europe we could observe higher prevalence of patients with history of acute rheumatic fever and the complications which could arise. The aim of this literature review is to investigate the short term and long-term sequalae’s of acute rheumatic fever and how can it affect the quality of life. This literature review evaluated multiple studies regarding the importance of primary and secondary prophylaxis, complications related to acute rheumatic fever and if they could affect the quality of life. The literature review showed that outcomes from acute rheumatic fever can range from no impact to a major impact on the quality of life. Rheumatic heart disease and its complications showed to have the greatest impact on quality of life. On the other hand, Sydenham chorea appears to have little impact on quality of life while arthritis had no impact on quality of life. ARF is still a major burden in developing countries with high prevalence due to the lack of primary and secondary prophylaxis. The major concern is the development of RHD which can have devastating consequences and have major impact in quality of life.
