Kopsavilkums
The aim of this research is to describe communication between the nurse and the patient during cataract surgery. In 2010, 10.6 million people were diagnosed with cataract blindness and 34.4 million people were diagnosed with moderate or severe visual impairment worldwide, according to estimates by expert group on vision loss "Fight for Sight". (Wevill, 2019) According to statistical data, cataract surgery is one of the most common eye surgeries in Latvia. (Slimību profilakses un kontroles centrs, 2018) As the number of planned surgeries and the flow of patients increase, the quality of communication between the nurse and the patient may also be affected. (Weiner, 2013) Currently there are no studies that reflect communication between the operating room nurse and the patient during cataract surgery, taking on discount the large patient flow and the potential reduction in communication time. The research question of the thesis is - what kind of communication there is between the nurse and the patient during cataract surgery? The method of qualitative research was used for the research, where a semi-structured interview was used as a method of data acquisition, with the help of which it was possible to conduct an interview using previously prepared questions. 7 operating room nurses from two Riga hospitals working in the ophthalmology operating unit were interviewed. After summarizing the results, it was found that the aim of the operation nurse and patient communication is to find mutual contact, to educate the patient about the drugs to be used before surgery and their need, about the course of surgery, feelings during surgery and postoperatively and positioning on the operating table, thus promoting the patient's understanding of the upcoming surgery, taking into account the time constraints and communication time constraints and factors influencing communication.
