Kopsavilkums
Background: Peri-implant diseases, such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis are significant biological side effects of dental implant treatment which can cause implant failure. By understanding the etiological and risk factors of peri-implant diseases, it is easier to prevent these happening and implant failures. Early detection of periodontal health problems is the key point when talking about long-lasting dental implants and avoiding of implant failures. Aim: Provide accurate knowledge about how periodontal problems affect to tooth implants and cause their failures. Objectives: The objectives of this literature review were to investigate available information regarding implant failure due to periodontal health problems based on different databases and examine the current approach to the etiology, diagnosis, risk factors and prognosis of peri-implant diseases. Conclusions: Peri-implant diseases are one of the most common reasons for dental implant failure. Several variables, including poor oral hygiene, systemic diseases, smoking, previous periodontal health problems, excessive alcohol consumption and genetical factors are associated with peri-implant diseases. Prevention is the most important treatment method when it comes to peri-implant diseases and preventing dental implant failure.
